China Restricts Exports of Some Graphite Products

China’s commerce ministry plans to restrict exports of some graphite products in a bid to protect national security.

Buyers of three types of “highly sensitive” graphite products will have to apply for permits before the graphite can be exported, effective Dec. 1, the ministry said Friday.

Graphite is used in batteries for electric vehicles.

The commerce ministry also said it would remove export restrictions that were earlier placed on five graphite products which have “low sensitivity” and are used in steel and chemical sectors.

The ministry said the export restrictions on graphite products were in line with international practice and Beijing has notified related countries about the move.
